Sunlight African Community Center (SACC)
was granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS in November 1996 and began serving the community in February of 2000.
The Center was founded in order to help the underserved African immigrant community gain access to resources and tools for empowerment.
The organization's mission is to aid and assist African immigrants in all aspects of community development and empowerment by providing
a safe educational, recreational, social and cultural heaven for youth and adults.
Note From the Founder, Ruphina Pettis
We began our mission to serve in an empty room with no chairs, tables, or resources of any kind. We were literally sitting on the floor! So I went
from house to house, to churches and grocery stores to recruit students and encourage donations. It was definitely hard work, but in the end, it paid off.
We now have expanded our facility to a three-room space, including a computer lab with 15 computers. But more important than this, we have
developed steady enrollment figures, due to a committed Board of Directors and dedicated volunteers and interns, collaborators, sponsors and friends.
The Department of Human Services of Chicago has played an important role as well. We owe many thanks to all these wonderful people for
contributing immensely to our success.
